Organization: Solar Panthers Club

Acronym(s): UNISPC
Organization Type(s): Technology
Description: UNI Solar Panthers Club's mission is to promote, and inform the public, and the general student body of the University of Northern Iowa about ecologically friendly boating technologies, to promote interest in science, technology, and education, to provide students an opportunity to apply theory to a practical project in a team environment, to acquaint students with a practical educational experience that helps to develop teamwork and inter-disciplinary skills, and to establish a high standard of ethics and competitive sportsmanship. Many of us are well aware of pollution of Iowa Lakes and Rivers due to the massive agricultural production. However, due to oil and gas spills by inefficient two stroke boat motors, constitutes a significant amount of pollution in the Iowa waterways. Worldwide 236,000 metric tons of oil and oil products are leaked into the water through these types of boats, more than seven times the amount spilled by Exxon Valdez Spill in Alaska in 1989!
